Since we finished planting and mulching our first site, the interns took a short break on design with some much needed maintenance at MME. Judy, the Garden Coordinator at MME, had some work for the team to do.
At MME, there is a small edible garden with a variety of different annuals and perennials. One of the largest plants was the lemongrass. It was taking up a lot of space for other species to be grown, and could potentially be divided into smaller plants.
We took the opportunity to give the interns a hands-on lesson in transplanting and dividing a rhizometous plant. The plant was huge, dividing into over two dozen gallon pots and rhizome filled 4x4s, which leaving a hefty mother plant to transplant into a new spot in the garden. Plus, the interns were treated to some fresh lemongrass!
